Journal of a Rimworld Colony

1st of Aprimay, 5500

I sabotaged a large slaver ship and targeted a group of escape pods, including mine, towards an uncharted rimworld. Some may argue that it would be better to be a slave than stranded in such a place, which is why I won’t be telling anyone what I did.

Out of our pods and deep in the mountains everyone is a bit confused and scared until a few more pods touch ground and open to reveal food, medicine, and most importantly: weapons. The selection of weapons came from the slavers’ personal property storage, so there was everything from a small hammer to charge rifles, but everyone seemed pretty keen on what to grab.

There is enough food for a month or two and who knows how long the medicine will last but there’s plenty of it.

I suppose here would be a good place to write what I know about who I am with, first my pact sisters: Syo and Carri

Syo is a strange girl who finds joy in doing most anything. She was born in a glass world, which means she’s spent most of her life underground. She doesn’t talk much but her superior looks cause people to treat her well.

Carri is strong, supposedly strong enough to replace mining machinery in some cases, and at only the cost of being fed, she was happy to do so. She was sold to the slavers once the mining tycoon she worked for made enough for a mining laser.

As the only teenage girls on the ship at the time, we formed a pact to protect each other.

Sadowi, he’s a bit of a mystery, but I can tell he was grown in a vat on a glitter-world. He has no trouble holding the over-sized axe he picked up from the weapons pod regardless of his small frame. Even carrying it over his shoulder he is able to step lightly enough to not scare the squirrels he walks past.

Ironfire, as he likes to be called, I remember the slavers already had him repairing weapons back on the ship after they picked him up from a medieval-looking planet. He seems the readiest to take on the challenge of this new environment, and probably just as into fire as I am.

Clair and Clarity, these two siblings stick close to one another.

Clair seemed to me an albino at first but his eyes are white and he’s okay with the sun. Although Clarity keeps him on task, he is sometimes distracted by a wall in a mountain we’ve landed near. I suspect there’s something behind it, and even though he seems more interested in it than anything. I will make sure we’re ready before I let him in there.

Clarity is naked… the slavers had a hard time keeping clothing on her and eventually had to lock a jumpsuit onto her that she couldn’t remove, I suppose they didn’t want to be perceived as sex slavers. Now that we’re out she’s cut the jumpsuit off with a knife. Other than that oddity she seems content to keep things cozy, she’s even cleaned our temporary sleeping spot under a natural overpass.

Nivalia has already been picking fruits and herbs which will help us stay fed while we establish a base here. She extremely skilled at picking out the good stuff and has already provided us a list of berries that are okay to eat.

Fox and Ebony have already been on patrol for any aggressive animals, and they helped us put up a wall and clear out any nasty creatures still inside. Although Fox seems more disciplined than Ebony they both look like they can handle combat quite well.

PLO, another odd name, and one that he has often expressed he wants to be written in all capital letters. It might be an acronym for something but nobody has cared enough to ask him. Taking one of the most powerful weapons from the pod and mining in a way that leaves nothing but rubble, it seems destruction is his fancy, which can be quite useful in our situation so long as he’s given proper direction.

As night falls we have a proper enclosure from wild animals, some fresh food, and material mined from the mountainsides.

2nd of Aprimay, 5500

Today day went by quick, after a rough sleep everybody was ready and willing to set up proper shelter and make beds, the floor is still just dirt and rock but we can fix that later.

While Clair, Fox, and I started making some of the many large rocks around here into useful bricks, the others tilled a few fields that Syo and Nivalia have begun work in.

3rd of Aprimay, 5500

We picked all the plants, cut down all the trees, and shot down every animal we missed in our new home to make space for base construction. Our first priority was a forge so that Ironfire can make us the tools we need to get things done.

5th of Aprimay, 5500

It should come as no surprise that I won’t be keeping a daily journal as the general eventfulness of things winds down. Yesterday was nothing but planning and mining and today we built a walk-in freezer for all the food we want to keep fresh. Everybody has been focused on surviving so the severity of being stranded on a rimworld likely hasn’t set in yet.

6th of Aprimay, 5500

Clair keeps getting too close to that wall like he’s looking for a loose brick, I had Carri build a barricade of wooden spikes to keep him away from it.

We finished building a complete power system for wind and solar energy to power our fridge and future electronics.

Later in the day we heard some banging on our north wall, Carri volunteered to investigate the moment that it started. After only seconds we heard the blood-curdling scream of a man whom Carri promptly dragged in as his leg had been completely destroyed. We threw him in the battery room and Nivalia saved his upper leg to his knee but had to amputate the rest.
Clarity went in shortly after with a peg leg I had crafted and successfully installed it so when we release him he can get out of my sight faster.

7th of Aprimay, 5500

Ironfire tried to set the base on fire, seems like he does have pyromania, just like me. We’ll both have to stay medicated to avoid destroying everything we’ve been working for.

We released the prisoner, which prompted some conversation about keeping an eye out for future invasions, we’ll be building a lookout tower complete with a few bedrooms. It will be built along the mountain until we can see our entire surroundings, except to the east, which is nothing but impassable mountains.

Sadowi came back to base with a couple of alpaca following him, seems like he’s been feeding the wildlife.

8th of Aprimay, 5500

Easily spotting a group of travelers, we confirmed the lookout tower’s effectiveness.

We built a kitchen just outside the freezer, Clarity is now spending her time preparing food. Ebony is also cooking reheatable meals during the night.

Some ‘visitors’ in power armor with high-tech weaponry came by and implied it would be nice to have some beds to sleep in, we let them stay in our barrack and slept outside tonight.

9th of Aprimay, 5500

Clarity has been wanting her own room, which is surprising considering her lack of any need for privacy. So we set out to work on that.

The visitors hunted a couple of animals for us before they left as an apology for making us sleep outside.

Some sort of noise started coming from the wall tonight, telling me to destroy it, resisting it is painful, but opening that wall could mean death.

12th of Aprimay, 5500

The voices stopped and a heat wave came in, we’ll be spending the day getting power to every room so everyone can have some air conditioning.

Fox was on the watch tower when he spotted raiders come in via drop pods, in the time it took for them to get to us we packed a bunch of sandbags and laid them waist high along the outside of our wall. Syo and I took a bullet each, but Sadowi’s alpaca charged at them, drawing most of the fire.

One of the alpaca, which Nivalia named Elmer, lost a leg. I’ll consider figuring out some way to replace it, seeing as it will increase his combat effectiveness.

We took a prisoner from the raiders and put him in the battery room. He has no major injuries. We can’t feed him and nobody wants him dead so we’re releasing him the moment he can walk.

Another series of drop pods came down, unfermented alcohol, it might be what those raiders wanted our base for, this stuff must be illegal where they came from.

We released the prisoner in the middle of the night and on his way out he stepped on a deer, which angered it to the point of taking him down, then going after Fox who was watching him leave. Fox got a shot in before it reached him but he ended up having to wrestle it until Carri came out and broke its spine with a sledgehammer.

13th of Aprimay, 5500

Our power system isn’t enough for all the air conditioners, we’ll have to spend some time upgrading it.

Just as we finished our upgrades, the temperature dropped significantly, the heat wave is over. We’ll have to find another use for all this power.

14th of Aprimay, 5500

Nivalia brought in a massive haul of corn, our freezer is packed. There’s some space to upgrade the size of it, but I’ll start looking into methods of more effective storage.

15th of Aprimay, 5500

Ebony spotted a pack of tribal people heading in from the south, we don’t have anything to hide behind past that wall, we’re waking the others up and waiting for them to breach it.

15th of Aprimay, 5500 cont.

Once they breached the door they stood no chance as a hail of explosive and charge bullets rained down on them. Very quickly getting an idea of our destructive power the tribals fled. Once again we took a prisoner, helped him get better and plan to release him.

1st of Jugust, 5500

Summer is here, our air conditioning is operating fine, so I don’t see the heat giving us any problems.

The prisoner woke up and tried to break down the door in a panicked attempt to escape. Clarity tended to his bruised fists afterwards. We’re giving him some time to breathe before we release him.

Traders came by, they didn’t have much, but they were willing to buy all the weaponry past raiders had been leaving in our area.

3rd of Jugust, 5500

We completed the freezer expansion, Clarity’s room, and a small medical room. As well as a small series of bedrooms to completely empty the barracks, now we can put in some workbenches for a variety of things and prepare to breach the west wall, where the voices are coming from.

8th of Jugust, 5500

Another raid, another easy victory, there were more this time however, and they might be getting bigger. I’m starting to suspect these aren’t just raids conducted to rob us, but to destroy us.
I was able to cobble together an improvised turret this time to help us, I’m hoping to improve on this technology and fully automate our self-defense, but that’s a long time coming.

This time we took three prisoners, since we couldn’t keep them all in the battery room we’re letting them use a few of the leftover barrack beds.

10th of Jugust, 5500

A massive chunk of ship crashed just outside the base, the plants around it are dieing out at a very rapid pace. If it’s leaking poison we may have to leave this place.

After a few hours some high-tech traders came by, they told us the poison would only affect plant life, but if we didn’t destroy the ship it would kill our crops eventually. They admitted it would be too risky to attempt and destroy it themselves, since mechanoids likely stir within.

The voices again… I can’t understand them, are they talking to the ship that just crashed?

One of the traders heard the voice and tried to break the wall, good thing the barricade was there.

12th of Jugust, 5500

We expanded mining operations to gather the steel we’ll need to set up a defense matrix around the poison ship.

Carri got a little too hasty and got her eye damaged during a small cave in. Her crushed eye had to be surgically removed.

13th of Jugust, 5500

There’s another large building with the same kind of wall as the one in our base, if we’re going to stop the voice we may have to destroy whatever is in this one too.

2nd of Septober, 5500

A flash storm erupted near the second large building, setting it on fire and ripping it open. Ancient mechanoids stormed from the structure and blasted their way into our base before we could react. Though much of our base was destroyed and many shots were taken, we got out without any permanent damage. In light of these events, we now know exactly what we've been sleeping next to.

5th of Septober, 5500

I’ve figured out how to properly disassemble the mechanoids whose tough metal exteriors could prove useful for building many things.

6th of Septober, 5500

A hive of giant bugs burrowed up from the ground in Syo’s room, thankfully she wasn’t there. Carri, Elmer, and Sadowi held the bugs back whilst Ebony took them out with his shotgun. The area was cleaned up, and we all agreed to make the insect meat into kibble for Elmer.

Our turret erroneously targeted a tortoise, whilst this was some easy meat, I’ll be taking a look at that turret.

7th of Septober, 5500

We had a meeting today, it was short. Basically, we confirmed that Nivalia will have full authority over the farm, and Clair will head research efforts. I’ll research my own way regardless.

There was also the matter of the poison ship, but it seems like it’s still going to be a while before it threatens our crops.

15th of Septober, 5500

We mined all the materials we need and had begun work on a defense matrix that would be able to take on both the poison ship and the possible mechanoids beyond the wall. A tunnel has been dug out to lead the dormant ones to the same location as the poison ship.

Today however, a pack of sabretooths nearly destroyed the incomplete turret system. Sadowi went out and took care of them by himself, nearly died in the process but it seems like he lives for that sort of thing. Thankfully the value of their canine teeth should make up for the material we lost when an interested trader comes by.

1st of Decembary, 5500

Fox did nothing today, I only write this because it was an odd occurrence. Everybody takes some time off to play with the chessboard Clair made or watch the clouds. Today however, Fox just loitered about, didn’t even take watch.

Today is also the first day of winter, it’s cold enough for some complaints but the crops are fine and even Clarity isn’t shivering. We will be setting up some heaters for a comfortable sleep.

Twenty raiders, the biggest raid by far. Fully armored and seem to have a medieval level of tech, they’re scouting us. They came from the west, so it’s too difficult to tell if they will attack the north or south gate. It’s times like these I wish we had a way to attack from afar, I may start research into making a mortar.

A large group of traders came by, if they stick around too long they might get caught in the raid and consider our area too dangerous to return to.

I don’t know if it was a misfire or a genius idea, but in our attempt to keep the raiders away from the traders, we engaged near the poison ship and PLO made what seemed to be a terrible shot and hit the ship, angering the mechanoids inside. They fought the raiders first, whom fled in terror. As the mechanoids were distracted trying to kill our scattering enemies we shot them in the back, ending the threat of the poison ship effortlessly.

5th of Decembary, 5500

We completed our defenses and are ready to breach the wall. Carri will go in first and make a hole in it, then the mechanoids will do the rest.

I was wrong, after Carri made the hole she backed off for only a moment before she was compelled to look back in. It turns out the voices asking us to break the wall was an S.O.S. from former space soldiers. They put themselves into cryptosleep until help arrived, but they got no response from their military. There were eight, but only two survived the decompression of being released from cryptosleep so suddenly.

After some medical care and rest one of them decided to join us, the other wanted to locate any remnants of their lost military and made her way out to wander the rimworld.

Hiroshi, a former space soldier, it seems his time spent on the battlefield has given him trouble sleeping and he avoids Clarity when he can. He’s really into the smokeleaf Nivalia has been growing, to the point that he’s already knocked himself out once by the time of my writing this.

There were also bugs, much like the giant ones that attacked us, in the cryptosleep caskets, Hiroshi explained that they excel at fighting mechanoids. Sadowi is set on taming them.

7th of Decembary, 5500

Technology for an indoor sunlamp is complete, this thing will use a lot of power, but if we can create an underground system of fertilized soil we won’t have to worry about the weather ever affecting our crops. We’ve started a massive mining operation for the new farms.

10th of Decembary, 5500

I finally made a working radio that can communicate with trade ships. We did some trading with it today, but in the middle of it we got a strange call about a ship that could take us off this rimworld. Thing is, the coordinates are on the other side of the planet, it would take two years at best to get there, and we haven’t even been here one full year.

12th of Decembary, 5500

Another poison ship, it’s just north of the base. We’ll employ the same strategy, if we get attacked from the north, we’ll shoot the ship and finish off the survivors.

Hiroshi had some insight on the mechanoids to share with us. They are targeting this rimworld to clear it of life and mine its resources in order to expand their army. It makes sense, we’ve come across many minerals in our mining operations without using any method to seek them out, this planet must be packed full of stuff those mechanoids could use.

14th of Decembary, 5500

A series of drop pods landed nearby, oddly there was nothing in them, at least we can scrap them for metal.

1st of Aprimay, 5501

Today marks our first full year here in our new home.

Ebony spotted a large amount of trees falling in the distance. It seems a large pack of beavers has moved in. The moment Fox heard the news he ran off to hunt them. Syo, Ebony, and I joined him, it’d be best to eliminate them if we want to keep building things with wood as well as fueling Iron’s smithy.

6th of Aprimay, 5501

A much bigger hive of bugs dug their way into the soon-to-be underground farm. Even I had to help with patching people up else a lot of people would have died. The hive is still active but nobody is in good enough condition to get close and destroy it.

7th of Aprimay, 5501

Hiroshi cleared out the hives and work has resumed on the farms. He also apologized about the bugs, apparently they use to be tame, they were released on the planet to destroy the mechanoids. He speculates he’s been in cryptosleep for hundreds to thousands of years seeing as the bugs he knew were never aggressive towards humans.

8th of Aprimay, 5501

A group of raiders were setting up something near our base. I took some shots at them until they gave that up and chased me to our defenses. They had schematics for a mortar. We took three prisoners. One of them is going to stay and help me decipher these schematics whether he likes it or not.

9th of Aprimay, 5501

A plume of toxic dust has settled over the entire region. Our plants are okay, and thankfully it doesn’t seem too poisonous. Clarity and Nivalia have determined that it should be okay to spend some time outside, and we should build overhangs that go a few feet out to better keep the dust outside.

10th of Aprimay, 5501

We’ve decided to hunt all the animals in the area before this dust kills all the available meat. Our hunters will attend regular check-ups to make sure they aren’t breathing in too much of it.

11th of Aprimay, 5501

The plants might be okay but Nivalia isn’t. She can’t work the farms all day with this dust. We’re hastening the construction of the indoor farms so she can work safe.

13th of Aprimay, 5501

Most of the animals outside have died, we’re scavenging what we can before there’s no more meat in the area.

Takashi, the prisoner we kept has decided to join us upon seeing my research into bionics. He wants me to make him into a cyborg. He was grown in a vat as a soldier just like Sadowi. However, he was abandoned and left to fully mature in his vat unsupervised. He survived and was picked up by the pirates he attacked us with. He wants nothing more than to be more powerful than what even his superior vatgrown-flesh can handle.

14th of Aprimay, 5501

Ironfire, Sadowi, Ebony, Clarity, and Hiroshi have caught some sort of disease. It could be from the toxic air, but everyone else seems okay, even Nivalia who has spent the most time in it.

15th of Aprimay, 5501

Nivalia stayed up overnight taking care of the sick. Sadowi is in the worst condition as he refused to stay still much of the time, his terrible condition has kept him from getting far though.

Another mechanoid ship right near the other, but the moment this one landed the voices started up again. These voices want me to attack the others, I won’t listen, but I’m not sure about everybody else. We should plan to destroy this ship quickly.

1st of Jugust, 5501

Takashi helped me build an EMP mortar and with the mechanoids unable to function properly under its barrage they were easy prey.

Carri punched Fox in the jaw after he insulted her today.

Everyone has recovered from the disease that spread.

2nd of Jugust, 5501

The toxic dust is gone, Nivalia has decided to continue to use the indoor farms for our food and grow food for Sadowi’s boars outside.

6th of Jugust, 5501

Toni, a wanted criminal, escaped a prison ship via an escape pod and landed near our base. We let her join us under the condition that we won’t hesitate to give her up if she’s found here. She’s offered to be at the front line of combat and says she will patch herself up when she gets hurt.

9th of Jugust, 5501

We destroyed the poison ship, the animals outside were running out of food, which meant not many were migrating back into the area after the toxic dust. The EMP mortar is invaluable in making destroying these mechanoids an easy time.

With all the mechanoids disassembled I have enough material to fix everybody up with bionic parts. Most common injury is scarred eyes, I’m sure everyone will be happy to see clearly again and even better than before.

12th of Jugust, 5501

Raiders, we met them head on, they had some interesting technology. A shield bubble surrounded some of them. Our bullets bounced off for a bit before the shields popped, we destroyed the ones they were wearing, but maybe I can try to figure out how to make our own. I’m sure Sadowi and Carri would be much more effective in combat wearing them.

Drop pods filled with mannequins landed nearby… some sort of safety test maybe?

15th of Jugust, 5501

Ebony, Takashi, Syo, Clair, Clarity, and Hiroshi came down with Malaria. Nivalia and Toni are taking care of them.

6th of Septober, 5501

With nearly a week of peace the colony has decided to elect a mayor, I encouraged Carri to run against Takashi.

9th of Septober, 5501

Alice, a tribal we took prisoner from a raid yesterday has decided to join us. She also wants to be turned into a cyborg. She knows how to operate an ancient hwacha.

12th of Septober, 5501

The Purple Valley Federation, they’re the tribals who’ve been attacking us. We’ve patched up and released so many of theirs that they decided not to attack us anymore.

Dino, a tribal from that group is also interested in bionic upgrades, I guess the tribal environment fosters a desire for unnaturally high strength.

13th of Septober, 5501

Takashi was elected mayor, oddly enough, nobody likes him. I suspect everyone just wants somebody to blame for things and they’d rather not do that to Carri.

15th of Septober, 5501

We’ve begun making our clothing out of hyperweave, slightly heavier than cloth but highly bullet-resistant.

2nd of Decembary, 5501

Another bug hive in the farms. I may have to figure out some good indoor defenses. They snuck around and destroyed some things, but the farm area is a good spot for Sadowi and Carri’s fighting style.

12th of Decembary, 5501

It’s been a quiet month, I’ve been able to research better power options to supply the electricity needed for an even larger underground farm. Using the material from the mechanoids I’ve just about doubled the output of one of our geothermal generators. The upgrade is greatly expensive but a month of mining in peace has brought a hefty supply of material to use.

3rd of Aprimay, 5502

Brash is dead, this is Syo, I will be writing in this journal from now on. A pack of giant walrus attacked us. One of them bit Brash’s head off. It took us all day to kill them, they destroyed all of our defenses and killed many of our boars.

Brash had promised to construct bionic bodies for a couple of our new colonists here. Fox, Ironfire, and Clair have been going over the schematics and will help keep that promise.

4th of Aprimay, 5502

Clair is taking research in a new direction. He wants us to be safe, starting with making more stable batteries. Brash never minded them exploding even though it could hurt somebody.

5th of Aprimay, 5502

A dry thunderstorm destroyed our power lines, we’ve decided to build something more fireproof.

We’ve changed our defenses to something more manual, some believe that Brash’s obsession with automation was endangering us.

6th of Aprimay, 5502

PLO and Sadowi fought off a raid by themselves. PLO’s sniping ability took care of any enemies holding shivs and spades, whilst Sadowi’s new shield belt allowed him to close in on enemies with guns without issue.

We captured a prisoner, her name is Ash, we will be releasing her, because she’s hard to look at.

A few people got sick, it’s nothing we haven’t seen. I’ll take over cooking while Clarity is busy.

9th of Aprimay, 5502

A psychic ship landed, thankfully a friendly arms caravan was passing by, they were happy to show off their wares.

10th of Aprimay, 5502

We had to cope with a power outage while we switched from our normal batteries to the new safe batteries that won’t overload any power lines.

12th of Aprimay, 5502

A mass of bug nests cropped up in the farms last night, we had to lock the doors. Currently the plan is to slowly whittle away at them until we can reach the nests. We have plenty of food to survive without the farms for a while.
